The Everest or Khumbu region, located in the north east of Nepal
is justifiably the most popular destination for trekking, peak
climbing and mountain expedition. This region consists of rugged
landscape of high mountains that include Mt. Everest (8,848 m),
Mt. Lhotse (8501 m), Cho Oyu (8153 m) and many other popular
climbing peaks, glaciers, lakes, river valleys, world renowned
Buddhist monasteries, national park with exotic flora and fauna,
settlement of Sherpas. Everest
(Sagarmatha) National Park has been declared as world heritage
site by UNESCO. The tourism infrastructures are well developed
in the region for the last few years. There are two options to
get to the Khumbu region either by flight from Kathmandu to
Lukla (round trip) or drive by bus to Jiri for any moderate to
challenging treks and mountain expedition. The Everest Base Camp
trek is a classic trek which follows in the footsteps of Hillary
& Tenzing and ends with an ascent of Kala Pattar for superb
views of Everest. The major ethnic groups that live in the
Everest region are Sherpas, Rais, Tamangs, Brahmins and
Chhetris. |
